NOY'S NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION: GET REGULAR EXERCISE
MANILA, DECEMBER 31, 2010 (STAR) By Aurea Calica - President Aquino, like most people, has a New Year's resolution for 2011 - get regular exercise to keep himself fit for the next five and a half years he will be serving as chief executive.
He said he would want to do a lot more than what he was doing for the country and "I hope to find the strength for that."
"To that extent, we will have an exercise regime that is regular. I'm taking up biking," Aquino told reporters in an ambush interview after the flag raising and wreath-laying ceremonies in commemoration of the 114th death anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal at the Luneta in Manila.
The President is not known as a sports enthusiast. He likes firing guns and driving fast cars. When he needs to relax, he said he would watch movies and listen to music. He also said he could not quit smoking yet.
The President said he would be working during the New Year break and spending time with his family in Metro Manila instead of going out of town. He had initially planned to go to his home province of Tarlac.
Aquino said he has a lot of backlog in terms of reading materials and would have to go through the yearend reports of all departments and agencies.
"When we talk about files in our office now, it's already by the foot in thickness. I am catching up on a third of it and have two-thirds more to finish and act on," the President said.
He said he would like to take advantage of the peace and quiet after the New Year to complete all the paperwork that needs his attention.
The President said he was planning to make a report to the nation on his first six months in office but his priority would be to "finish all of these things that I have to go through" as he did not want them to pile up further.
And speaking of plans for the coming year, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile listed among the priorities of the Senate for 2011 legislation aimed at enhancing the economy and bringing about political stability.
Congress went on recess earlier this month with just one bill passed into law, the General Appropriations Act of 2011, which was prioritized by both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Enrile noted that the Senate was also busy exercising its oversight function when it conducted inquiries in aid of legislation "in the hope of providing the necessary checks and balance in a democratic society."
He expressed optimism that 2011 would result in more bills passed, particularly those aimed at strengthening the economy, attracting more investments, creating new jobs and speeding up infrastructure development. - With Marvin Sy
