Hunger strike of Morong 43 starts today By Dennis Carcamo (philstar.com) Updated December 03, 2010 09:15 AM Comments (4) View comments
MANILA, Philippines – Members of the so-called Morong 43 – health workers arrested for allegedly being caught with chemicals used in making bombs and firearms – started their first day of hunger strike today to compel the government to release them from detention.
"This is the only course of action left us to end our continued illegal detention, there being no clear action by the government for our unconditional release," the group said in a statement.
During the course of their detention, they claimed being inhumanely treated and tortured in the past months by authorities.
"We were tortured physically and psychologically, deprived of sleep, subjected to various indignities, threatened with harm, denied legal counsel for several days and illegally detained until now. Planted evidence was used and false charges were filed against us," they added.
They also reiterated their call for President Aquino to act on the review of their case, which is now pending before his office after the Department of Justice (DOJ) made its recommendations.
"Our action today and in the succeeding days is a call to President Aquino to simply order the withdrawal of the case against us forthwith so that we may be immediately and unconditionally released. We believe it is only fitting that we stage this hunger strike as the world observes Human Rights Week. We fight not only for our freedom but for the freedom of all political prisoners nationwide," the group said.
The health workers were nabbed by police and military during a raid in a house in Morong, Rizal, on Feb. 6. They maintained that they were merely attending a medical training.
They are now detained at Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig City.
