MANILA, NOVEMBER 17, 2010 (MALAYA) Iza Calzado is easily one of the few actresses around who are brilliant in their craft. And she has the accolades to prove her mettle.
Now she reaps the fruits of her labor with the excellent feedback she is getting from her most recent assignment, the soap opera "Beauty Queen" on GMA. The good ratings awarded to GMA-7's "Beauty Queen" is but one of the many testaments to her maturity as an actress. It helps that she is handled by by the acclaimed Joel Lamangan, who guided her to winning a major acting award as Maricel Salvacruz in last year's "Dukot (Desaparacidos)."
Her character, Maita San Miguel is a role close to her heart as it was a dream of her late mom to see her as a title holder in the beauty arena. Like her, Maita is a "reluctant beauty queen."
"The biggest challenge for me is to try to look the part and emotionally feel the part," said Iza. She said it helps that she derives so much pleasure sharing scenes with acting veterans like Elizabeth Oropesa and Bembol Roco who help her shine in their scenes.
While sharing the lead with fellow stunners Maggie Wilson and Katrina Halili, Iza easily slips into the beauty queen role. It is because she has the talent to make it seem that she's perfect for every role she plays, like when she appeared as a battered housewife in both "Sigaw" and its Jesse Bradford English version "Echo," or of Rosela Atilado in "Te Amo" and Reyna Amihan in "Encantadia."
One of the prized stars of GMA Artist Center (GMAAC), Iza has scored a Best Actress trophy in this year's Enpress Golden Screen Awards and a couple of Best Supporting Actress plums in the past, including one from Urian. Half a decade back she was dubbed the "Most Promising Female Actress" by the Guillermo Mendoza Foundation and earned a Breakthrough Performance citation for her role in "Milan" opposite matinee idol Piolo Pascual.
Iza's choices of roles are so diversified – and she shows that she can easily shift from one genre to the next. She is excellent even in her recent outings such as in the horror "White House," the funny "Working Girls," and fantasy-action "Ang Panday." But her talent is not limited to acting. Everyone knows what a good dancer she is, having inherited the genes from her choreographer father Lito Calzado. Her hosting talent is also one for much pride. Everytime she is tapped to host, she gets excellent reviews as well. She also does Q Channel's "Sweet Life" and "Healthy Cravings." Last year's Binibining Pilipinas coronation night also highlighted her hosting skills.
