WASHINGTON, OCTOBER 10, 2010 (STAR) By Jose Katigbak, STAR Washington Bureau – US Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported 392,862 aliens including 841 Filipinos in fiscal year 2010, a slight increase over that of last year, an ICE spokesman said.
He said of the total number of aliens deported in FY 2010 which ended on Sept. 30, about half had criminal records, including 343 Filipinos.
The Obama administration said its new focus on immigrants with criminal records is paying off with 195,772 of those deported in 2010 being convicted criminals.
Among those, more than 1,000 were convicted murderers and 6,000 had been convicted of sex offenses.
In 2009 when 389,834 immigrants were deported, only about one-third of them had criminal records.
Is the Deportation of Illegal Immigrants Right? THE AUTHOR: Steven Anner -
Sept 27, 2010
An appeal for a comprehensive immigration reform package that deals with the 12 million illegal immigrants already living in the United States.
The subject of deporting illegal immigrants has become a hot topic recently that stirs up strong emotions on both sides. On one side, some people are angry due to all the crimes and traffic accidents committed by illegal aliens.
Others are upset because these foreigners are earning money in this country but are sending those funds home to relatives in Mexico, Guatemala, and other countries instead of spending the money to help our sagging economy here.
The majority of these people insist on immediate deportation. On the other side, are those that want us to be more sensitive. They insist that we must recognize the needs of each immigrant. No matter which side you take, certainly we can say that this issue is more complicated than it first appears to be.
It concerns this writer that many are looking for solutions to the illegal immigrant problem without considering all the details.
It is hoped that this article will open our understanding a little more to everything that is involved that we might offer a comprehensive solution to the problem.

US deportations of illegal immigrants at record levels: US WASHINGTON OCTOBER 6, 2010

The United States deported a record 392,000 illegal immigrants over the past year, nearly half of them people with criminal convictions, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday.
The number deported during the 2010 fiscal year ending September 30 surpassed the record of 389,000 deportations set the previous year.
More than 195,000 of those deported were convicted criminals, according to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
"This administration has focused on enforcing our immigration laws in a smart, effective manner that prioritizes public safety and national security and holds employers accountable who knowingly and repeatedly break the law," Napolitano said.
Illegal immigration has become a hot election year issue, particularly in border states like Arizona which is wrestling over a controversial law that requires police to question suspected aliens about their immigration status.
Napolitano, herself a former Arizona governor, used the latest statistics to make the case that the administration of President Barack Obama has been tougher in enforcing immigration laws than his Republican predecessor George Bush.
She said the by-the-books approach has resulted in the removal of "more convicted criminal aliens than ever before and issuing more financial sanctions on employers who knowingly and repeatedly violate immigration law than during the entire previous administration."
Immigration agents have audited 3,200 employers suspected of hiring illegal immigrants, debarred 225 companies and individuals, and levied 50 million dollars in penalties -- more than during the entire Bush administration, ICE said.
Deportations of convicted criminals were up 70 percent in 2010 compared to 2008, the final year of the Bush administration, the agency said.

Lou Dobbs employed illegal immigrantsThu Oct 7, 9:04 am ET Report: By Michael Calderone
PHOTO AT LEFT - LOU DOBBS: The liberal Nation magazine, in a yearlong investigation conducted with the Investigative Fund at the Nation Institute, found that "Dobbs has relied for years on undocumented labor for the upkeep of his multimillion-dollar estates and the horses he keeps for his 22-year-old daughter, Hillary, a champion show jumper."]
Lou Dobbs has long railed against illegal immigration and the employers who hire undocumented workers. Dobbs generated controversy — and faced boycotts — for attacking "illegal aliens" as host of a nightly CNN show. And since leaving the network in December, Dobbs has kept talking about the issue in interviews, in which he's also left open the possibility of running for senator or president.
But Dobbs might want to pause before making illegal immigration a signature campaign issue: At least five illegal immigrants have reportedly worked on his properties.
The liberal Nation magazine, in a yearlong investigation conducted with the Investigative Fund at the Nation Institute, found that "Dobbs has relied for years on undocumented labor for the upkeep of his multimillion-dollar estates and the horses he keeps for his 22-year-old daughter, Hillary, a champion show jumper."
The Nation's Isabel Macdonald writes that while Dobbs has bashed employers for hiring immigrants without papers, he "has been far from vigilant about the status of workers laboring on his own properties." (The Nation has long editorialized against Dobbs and those who agree with him on immigration.)
Dobbs owns a 300-acre estate in Sussex, N.J., and a winter home in West Palm Beach, Fla. His daughter keeps five show horses worth about $1 million each at several stables; the horses are owned by the Dobbs Group, of which Lou Dobbs is president.
Macdonald spoke with several immigrants who were employed to work on winter property and helped with the upkeep of Dobbs' horses at stables in Vermont and Florida. "I looked after Dobbs' horses while I was illegal," said one man. Another worker said that he believed Hillary Dobbs knew they didn't have papers. (The workers did not give their real names for fear of deportation.)
Macdonald wrote that another worker worked on the garden at Dobbs' Florida property. On one occasion, that worker said, Lou Dobbs — who referred to himself as "Luis" — instructed him in Spanish to talk to his boss about moving a specific plant. Macdonald interviewed other immigrants who worked at the holiday home.
Hillary Dobbs did not comment for the article. And Lou Dobbs, through a radio producer on "The Lou Dobbs Show," declined to comment. Robert Zeller, Dobbs' attorney, said Dobbs would answer questions only on his live radio show; the Nation agreed to be on the show, but only after publication.
Dobbs has not yet responded to a request from The Upshot to discuss the allegations, which are sure to get attention given the commentator's very public views on the subject. The Nation compiled a video of Dobbs' past statements:
